A senior and team captain, Ben Hurd received the award for the week of Jan. 18, according to a statement from the high school.
During the hockey season, Hurd led the top-ranked Pelicans to a 13-1 record by scoring 24 goals and notching 12 assists, according to the high school.
During his junior season, Hurd was named to the Division 2 All-State First Team and received All Section and Section 1 Division 2 Player of the Year honors, the statement said.
“Ben is clearly one of the best people, and players I’ve ever coached,” said Ed Witz, varsity hockey coach. “He is an amazing captain and true leader and always comes up with big goals in big spots. I am very fortunate to have coached him.”
In addition to his success on the ice, Hurd has excelled in the classroom, according to the school, which said that he is a national merit semifinalist and a member of the math, science and English honor societies.
Hurd also took home first place in the Westchester Science and Engineering Fair and was a semifinalist in the Siemens science competition, the school said.
“On and off the ice, Ben has proven himself to be both an outstanding competitor and a dedicated student,” said Pelham Athletic Director Steve Luciana. “We are very proud of Ben and his accomplishments and congratulate him, his family and the entire hockey team.”
According to the high school, Hurd is to be interviewed on local radio at 5:15 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 22. To be aired on WHUD radio, 100.7FM, the interview will also be available online.
